Points to Remember- Class 10 – Social Science -Economics-Chapter 1 : Development

Different Developmental Goals:

Development goals vary among individuals, and what may be considered development for one person could be detrimental for another.

While some prioritize income and material possessions, others value non-material aspects such as equality, freedom, security, and respect.

National Development:

Nations may have conflicting notions of development, as different individuals within a country may prioritize different goals.

Comparing Countries or States:

Income is a crucial factor in comparing countries’ development, with higher income indicating greater development.

Average income, calculated as total income divided by total population (per capita income), is used to compare countries’ development levels.

World Development Reports use per capita income to classify countries into categories like rich and low-income countries.

Public Facilities:

Besides income, public facilities provided by governments are essential indicators of development.

Public facilities include infrastructure, sanitation, public transport, healthcare, and water supply.

Sustainability of Development:

Sustainable development meets present needs without compromising future generations’ ability to meet their own needs.

Current development practices, such as overuse of groundwater and depletion of natural resources, are unsustainable and threaten future generations’ well-being.
