Statement – Reported Speech – Practice test – NCERT – Class 9
Steps to Report Statements:
Identify the Reporting Verb:
Determine the appropriate reporting verb (e.g., said, told, mentioned) based on the context.
Introduce the Reported Speech:
Use an appropriate reporting clause to introduce the reported statement. This clause typically consists of the reporting verb followed by words like “that,” “if,” or “whether.”
Change Pronouns and Verb Tenses:
Adjust pronouns and verb tenses in the reported statement to reflect the perspective and timing of the original statement.
For example, change first-person pronouns (“I,” “we”) to third-person pronouns (“he,” “she,” “they”) and adjust verb tenses if the reporting is done at a later time.
Omit Quotation Marks:
Unlike direct speech, reported speech does not require quotation marks.
Example:
Direct Statement: “I am going to the party tonight,” she said.
Reported Statement: She said (that) she was going to the party that night.
Additional Notes:
In reported speech, it’s common to omit the conjunction “that” after the reporting verb, especially in informal contexts. However, it can be included for clarity or emphasis.
Adverbs indicating time, place, or manner may need to be adjusted depending on the reporting context.
Reported speech allows for paraphrasing the original statement while maintaining its meaning and essence.
