Questions – Reported Speech- Practice test -NCERT – Class 10

Reporting Yes/No Questions:

Changing the Reporting Verb:

The reporting verb is changed from a question form (e.g., “asked,” “inquired”) to a verb appropriate for reporting speech (e.g., “said,” “told”).

Removing the Question Word Order:

The question word order (auxiliary verb + subject) is replaced with the typical subject-verb order of a statement.

Adding a Reporting Clause:

It’s often useful to add a reporting clause to introduce the reported speech.

Example:

Direct Question: “Did she pass the exam?”

Reported Statement: She asked if/whether she had passed the exam.

Reporting Wh-Questions:

Changing the Reporting Verb:

As with yes/no questions, change the reporting verb to one suitable for reporting speech.

Replacing the Question Word with “If” or “Whether”:

If the original question begins with a question word like “who,” “what,” “where,” “when,” “why,” or “how,” replace it with “if” or “whether.”

Maintaining the Subject-Verb Order:

Keep the subject-verb order consistent with statement form.

Adding a Reporting Clause:

Include a reporting clause as appropriate.

Example:

Direct Question: “Where does she live?”

Reported Statement: She asked where she lived.

Important Notes:

In reported speech, it’s common to use “if” or “whether” to introduce reported yes/no questions, but it’s not obligatory.

In reported wh-questions, the word order remains the same as in a statement (subject-verb), not the original question order.

Additional Example:

Direct Question: “How long have you been waiting?”

Reported Statement: He asked how long she had been waiting.
